Rugged Handheld Scanners

If the scanner is used in multi-shift warehouse or manufacturing environments where drops, dust, moisture and temperature swings are routine, the rugged category is cheaper in the long run than frequently replaced general-purpose scanners – so the decision is primarily about environmental exposure. Since tasks requiring long scan distances (for example from a forklift in a high-bay warehouse) typically arise in such environments, extended-range scan engines are also mainly available in this category.

The first digit of the IP number indicates dust protection, the second water protection: IP65 is fully dust-tight and resists water jets, while IP67 also survives temporary immersion. Drop specification also matters for industrial scanners: models in this category typically survive drops to concrete without damage.

Extended-range (XR/ER) models read from near-contact to several metres, while extra-long-range (XLR) versions read suitably sized codes from beyond 10 metres – critical for high-bay warehouses and scanning from a forklift. The required range also depends on barcode size, so we size these together during selection.
