A barcode scanner is a device connected to a computer or POS system that reads a code and transmits it instantly. A data collector (mobile computer) is a standalone device with its own display and operating system running enterprise applications – a scanner and computer in one. RFID devices read radio-frequency tags: they require no line of sight, and can capture even hundreds of tags at once.
A direct thermal printer prints on heat-sensitive labels without a ribbon – cheaper to operate, but the print fades over time with heat and light, making it ideal for short-life labels (shipping labels, receipts, tickets). A thermal transfer printer transfers ink from a ribbon, producing a durable, abrasion and even chemical resistant print – this is what we recommend for product labels and industrial marking.
