The Datalogic PowerScan 9500 Series is a premium family of rugged industrial handheld area imagers designed for demanding 1D and 2D barcode reading applications. It is built for manufacturing, warehouse, logistics, access control, ticket validation and other environments where high scanning performance and strong device durability are both required. Unlike the PowerScan 9100 Series, which focuses on 1D linear imaging, the PowerScan 9500 Series provides omnidirectional 2D area imaging. This makes it suitable for applications that require reading of 1D codes, 2D codes, postal codes, stacked codes and composite codes in harsh industrial conditions. The series includes a corded model, the PD9500, and two cordless model directions. The PBT9500 uses Bluetooth wireless technology, while the PM9500 uses Datalogic’s STAR Cordless System 2.0, a proprietary narrow-band radio system designed for industrial wireless communication. A key technology in the PowerScan 9500 Series is Liquid Lens. This feature increases depth of field and allows one model to read standard, wide and high-density barcodes. This is especially useful in industrial applications where code size, print density and reading distance may vary significantly from one task to another. The scanner family delivers snappy omnidirectional reading, allowing operators to read codes without needing to align the scanner precisely with the barcode. This improves efficiency in fast-paced workflows such as receiving, picking, put-away, work-in-progress tracking, parcel preparation and end-of-line sorting. Datalogic Motionix motion-sensing technology detects the operator’s natural movements and automatically switches the scanner into the appropriate reading mode. The PowerScan 9500 Series also uses soft-pulsed white illumination. This reduces harsh flashes and is gentler on the operator’s eyes, which is important in scan-intensive environments where users perform repeated scanning throughout a shift. Datalogic 3GL / Three Green Lights technology provides strong visual confirmation, including Green Spot feedback directly on the code and dual Good Read LEDs on the top and back of the scanner cap. It auto-discriminates standard 1D linear codes including GS1 DataBar linear codes. It also reads 2D codes such as Aztec Code, China Han Xin Code, Data Matrix, MaxiCode, Micro QR Code and QR Code. Postal codes and stacked codes are supported as well, including PDF417, MicroPDF417, MacroPDF, EAN / JAN composites and UPC A / E composites. Image capture is available, with BMP, JPEG and TIFF graphic formats and grayscale options. This gives the scanner additional flexibility for workflows that require more than basic barcode reading. The imager sensor depends on configuration. The 9501 model uses an 864 x 544 sensor, while the 9501-HP model uses a 1280 x 1024 sensor. The 9501 supports maximum resolution of 4 mils for 1D codes and 7.5 mils for 2D codes. The 9501-HP supports maximum resolution of 2.5 mils for 1D codes and 4 mils for 2D codes. Typical reading ranges also vary by model. The 9501 reads 13 mil codes from 4 to 45 cm, 20 mil codes from 4 to 55 cm and 40 mil codes from 4 to 85 cm. The 9501-HP extends performance further, reading 13 mil codes from 3 to 60 cm, 20 mil codes from 3 to 70 cm and 40 mil codes from 3 to 110 cm, depending on symbol size, print quality, contrast and ambient light. The scanner is designed for rugged daily operation. All models withstand 50 drops from 2.0 m / 6.6 ft onto concrete. The cradle withstands 50 drops from 1.2 m / 3.9 ft. The series offers IP65 sealing against dust and water, 20 kV ESD air discharge protection, 0–95% non-condensing humidity tolerance and operation from -20°C to 50°C. The rugged yellow / black housing is designed for industrial use. The scanner measures 21.2 x 11 x 7.4 cm. The PD9501 corded model weighs 330 g, while PBT9501 and PM9501 cordless models weigh 400 g. PM9501 models with display and keypad weigh 445 g. The cordless PBT9500 uses Bluetooth 3.0 Class 1 wireless technology. It supports HID and SPP profiles, data encryption, scanner authentication and up to seven readers per radio receiver. Open-air radio range exceeds 100 m / 328 ft when used with the base station. The PM9500 uses Datalogic STAR Cordless System 2.0 with 433 MHz and 910 MHz radio options. It supports point-to-point and multi-point configurations, up to 16 readers per radio receiver, two-way communication and seamless roaming. Depending on frequency and speed, open-air range can reach 120 m / 393 ft at 433 MHz low speed or 220 m / 721 ft at 910 MHz low speed. The PM9501 also offers versions with display and keypad. Available configurations include a model with display and 4 configurable keys, and a model with display and full 16-key keyboard. This enables two-way interaction between the host system and the user, which can improve reliability and process control in industrial workflows. Cordless models use a 3350 mAh lithium-ion battery. Typical continuous reading performance is more than 60,000 reads per charge at 25°C. Charge time is 4.5 hours with external power or 10 hours with host power. The battery can be replaced in approximately 3 seconds, supporting continuous operation with minimal downtime. All models include multi-interface support. Interfaces include Keyboard Wedge, RS-232 and USB options such as OEM USB, USB COM and USB HID Keyboard. Optional Ethernet connectivity is available in standard and industrial versions. The series is also designed for easier maintenance. In-field replaceable windows and cradle contacts help extend service life and reduce downtime in industrial environments where devices are exposed to dust, impacts and heavy daily use.
