Thermal Transfer Ribbon

Wax, wax-resin and resin thermal transfer ribbons for different label materials and operating environments.

Thermal transfer ribbon, also known as ribbon, determines print contrast, durability, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance. Wax ribbons are typically suitable for standard paper labels, wax-resin ribbons for more demanding labelling tasks, and resin ribbons for synthetic, outdoor, chemical-resistant or highly durable industrial labels. The label printer, label material and ribbon type together define the final print result. Choosing the right ribbon reduces printhead wear, improves barcode quality, supports long-lasting readable marking and helps avoid reprints, waste and scanning errors caused by poor print quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wax ribbon is the most affordable, suited to paper labels in general indoor use. Wax-resin produces a more durable, abrasion-resistant print on both paper and plastic labels. Resin ribbon is the most resistant: chemical, heat and scratch proof, paired with plastic labels for industrial, outdoor and laboratory marking.

The ribbon should be at least as wide as the label, otherwise the part of the printhead beyond the label wears unprotected. At the same time, a significantly oversized ribbon is wasted cost. We help you select the right width and roll length for your label width and printer model.

Yes: the inked side can be wound facing out (ink out) or in (ink in), and printers typically support one of them. With the wrong winding the printer produces blank labels. Based on your printer model we can tell you which variant is required.
