Zebra HC2X/HC5X Series Mobile Computers

The Zebra HC2X healthcare mobile computer family includes the HC20 and HC25, compact rugged Android devices designed for clinical and non-clinical healthcare workers. They are built for hospitals, clinics, ambulatory centres, care homes, hospice and palliative care environments, home healthcare and other healthcare workflows where staff need a pocketable, disinfectant-ready and easy-to-manage mobile device. The HC2X series is positioned as the more accessible healthcare mobile computer platform within Zebra’s HC2X / HC5X family. It delivers healthcare-focused ergonomics, ruggedness, communication, data capture and enterprise management features in a slim, lightweight form factor. The HC20 is best suited for Wi-Fi-based use inside healthcare facilities, while the HC25 adds WWAN support for workers who need cellular connectivity, including 5G, outside the facility or across distributed care environments. The device is designed around healthcare ergonomics. It measures 165 mm × 76.3 mm × 12.5 mm, and the HC20 / HC25 weigh 239 g. The slim and lightweight design helps reduce hand fatigue during long shifts, while contoured surfaces and sculpted lower bumpers improve grip and comfort for different hand sizes. The 6.0-inch Full High Definition+ display provides 1080 × 2160 resolution and 450 nits brightness. It gives healthcare workers more screen space for clinical applications, task lists, patient data, messaging and workflow tools. The capacitive touch panel supports bare finger and light glove input, which is important in healthcare environments where staff may work with thin gloves. The HC2X series is built for constant cleaning and disinfecting. It uses advanced medical-grade healthcare plastics and a design that minimizes crevices where pathogens can accumulate. The housing and USB-C port plug are designed to support cleaning workflows, and the device supports more than 30 approved wipes and disinfectants according to the supplied material. This makes the HC20 and HC25 appropriate for shared healthcare use cases where devices may be cleaned between shifts, users or patient interactions. Healthcare safety and staff support are also part of the design. A dedicated red duress button can be configured to call a specific number or launch an application in emergency situations. The activation sequence is designed to help prevent false alarms. This can be valuable for nurses, home healthcare workers, care home staff, security staff or employees working in isolated areas. The HC20 and HC25 use a user-removable, rechargeable 3800 mAh / 14.63 Wh lithium-ion battery with PowerPrecision real-time battery metrics and fast charging. The battery can be removed and replaced, and standard USB-C charging provides flexibility. The true hot swap capability described in the broader HC2X / HC5X material applies to HC50 / HC55 only, so it should not be presented as an HC20 / HC25 feature. Performance is based on a Qualcomm 5430 hex-core processor running at 2.1 GHz. The HC20 and HC25 include 6 GB RAM and 64 GB UFS flash storage, with microSD expansion support up to 2 TB. This hardware is designed to support modern healthcare applications, communication tools, workflow software and image-based documentation. The HC2X series runs Android. Supported Android versions should be checked against Zebra’s current Android version support information for the selected deployment. Security features include Secure Boot and Verified Boot, helping protect device integrity in enterprise healthcare environments. Wireless connectivity depends on the selected HC2X model. The HC20 is intended for Wi-Fi use, while the HC25 adds WWAN with 5G NR Sub-6, Gigabit LTE-A, dual SIM / dual standby, VoLTE, LTE / NR carrier aggregation and support for private networking where available. HC25 SIM support includes one nano SIM and one eSIM, except in China. WLAN capabilities include IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, 2x2 MU-MIMO, dual band simultaneous operation, IPv4 and IPv6, enterprise security modes and fast roaming. The broader specification lists tri-band Wi-Fi 6E capabilities, while the footnote states that Wi-Fi 6E is available on the HC20 / HC25 Series with an Enterprise license upgrade. This should be handled as a licensing- and configuration-dependent capability, not assumed as standard in every HC2X deployment. Wireless security includes WPA3 Enterprise 192-bit mode, WPA3 Enterprise, WPA3 Personal, WPA / WPA2 Enterprise and Personal, Enhanced Open and WEP modes listed in the specification. Fast roaming support includes 802.11r Fast BSS Transition, PMK caching, Cisco CCKM and OKC. These capabilities are important in hospitals and campuses where workers move between access points while using voice, messaging and clinical applications. Bluetooth support is Bluetooth 5.2 Class 2 with BLE beaconing. NFC supports ISO 14443 Type A and B, Mifare, FeliCa, ISO 15693 cards, NFC Forum tags 2, 3, 4 and 5, host card emulation, contactless payment support, front tap NFC, Apple ECP 1.0 / 2.0, Apple VAS, Google Smart Tap and VAS Library / SDK support. Data capture is a key area that must be handled carefully for the HC2X models. The supplied material describes the SE4720 1D / 2D scan engine with white illumination and green aimer, as well as occasional barcode scanning through the rear camera with included barcode decoding software. However, regional availability differs. In North America, HC20 / HC25 models do not include the integrated SE4720 scan engine and use camera-based scanning. In the rest of the world, HC20 / HC25 / HC50 / HC55 models include the integrated SE4720 scan engine, while select HC25 models can be configured without a scan engine. This means the scanner configuration must be confirmed by region and SKU before quoting or publishing a final configuration. Where the integrated SE4720 scan engine is present, it is suitable for scan-intensive healthcare workflows such as patient wristbands, medication vials, supplies, medical equipment, food trays and other healthcare barcodes, including damaged or poorly printed codes. The white illumination and green LED aimer are designed to be patient-friendly and appropriate for healthcare and home healthcare environments. Where the scan engine is not present, barcode capture remains available through the rear camera and Zebra decoding software for more occasional scanning use cases. The HC20 and HC25 include a 16 MP rear camera for high-resolution photo capture. This supports documentation tasks such as wound condition capture, facility rounds, equipment condition, asset documentation and service records. The 5 MP front camera mentioned in the broader family specification applies to HC50 / HC55 only, so it should not be presented as an HC2X feature. Voice and collaboration features are important for healthcare use. The HC2X series includes built-in microphones for AI noise suppression and stereo recording, dual speakers, Bluetooth wireless headset support, Zebra USB-C PTT headset support, high-quality stereophonic speakerphone support, HD voice, VoLTE EVS and VoIP including super-wideband audio. Optional Zebra Workcloud Communication tools can enable push-to-talk, cellular / Wi-Fi PTT and PBX handset functionality, depending on licensing and deployment. The HC2X series includes dual dedicated scan buttons, a programmable button for push-to-talk or other functions, volume buttons and the dedicated red duress button. This makes the device more workflow-oriented than a consumer smartphone and supports faster access to core healthcare tasks. Durability is appropriate for daily healthcare use. The device supports multiple 1.25 m drops to tile over concrete across the -10°C to 50°C operating temperature range per MIL-STD-810H. It also supports 500 tumbles at 0.5 m, IP68 and IP65 sealing with battery, ±15 kV air discharge and ±8 kV direct / indirect ESD protection. Storage temperature is -40°C to 70°C, with 5% to 95% non-condensing humidity. The HC2X series is supported by Zebra DNA. For HC20 / HC25, Zebra DNA Professional is included. To access the full Zebra DNA offering, Zebra DNA Enterprise license is required. Zebra DNA tools help with setup, security, management and optimization, while Zebra Guardian solutions can support device storage, access control, accountability and device recovery. Availability of Guardian Cabinets and related solutions may vary by country. The devices can also be used with Workstation Connect to create a mobile-driven workstation with a larger screen, keyboard, mouse and printer. For HC20 / HC25, this requires a Zebra DNA Enterprise license. This can be useful at nurse stations, ward hubs or portable healthcare workstations where a mobile device needs to support desktop-style work. Typical facilities include hospitals, ambulatory centres, outpatient facilities, nursing and care homes, hospice and palliative care, and home healthcare. Non-clinical applications include environmental health, facilities management, patient transport, materials management, food services, engineering, security, hospital supply chain management and staff training. Clinical users include nurses, physicians, clinical support staff, in-home caregivers, therapists, lab and pharmacist technicians, phlebotomists, midwives, paramedics, telehealth workers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, behavioural health specialists and consultants. Overall, the Zebra HC2X series is a purpose-built healthcare mobile computer platform for organisations that need a pocketable, disinfectant-ready Android device for clinical and non-clinical workflows. The HC20 is best for Wi-Fi-based facility use, while the HC25 is better for workflows that require cellular connectivity, 5G or private LTE / 5G support. Its strongest value lies in healthcare ergonomics, disinfectant-ready construction, 6-inch display, removable battery, healthcare communication features, flexible barcode capture options, Zebra DNA manageability and rugged healthcare-ready design.
