Zebra RFD40 UHF RFID Sleds

Zebra RFD40 UHF RFID Sleds – 1/1

The Zebra RFD40 UHF RFID Standard Sled is a high-performance RAIN RFID sled designed to extend compatible Zebra mobile computers with fast, accurate and future-ready UHF RFID reading. It is built for organizations that need to complete cycle counts faster, locate inventory and assets more efficiently, and support RFID-based workflows without replacing their entire mobile device infrastructure. The RFD40 Standard Sled connects to supported Zebra eConnex-enabled mobile computers through Zebra’s eConnex technology. This snap-and-go connection is designed to simplify pairing and future-proof deployments by supporting current and future Zebra mobile devices. The source specifically highlights compatibility with supported eConnex-enabled devices such as TC21 / TC26, EC50 / EC55 and future models. The sled is designed for high RFID performance. It supports EPC Class 1 Gen 2 and EPC Gen2 V2 standards and uses Zebra Proprietary Radio Technology. The source lists a fastest read rate of more than 1,300 tags per second and a nominal read range of 40 ft / 12 m. This makes the RFD40 Standard Sled suitable for cycle counting, inventory management, item finding, asset tracking and other high-volume RFID workflows. A key practical feature is the ultra-accurate item-finder mode. Workers can use the sled to locate specific items, assets, patients or tagged objects more easily, rather than only reading groups of tags. This is especially useful in retail back rooms, warehouses, healthcare asset management, pharmacy operations, hospitality inventory and other environments where locating the right item quickly matters. The RFD40 Standard Sled includes a tri-function programmable trigger. This allows associates to access RFID reading, barcode scanning through the attached mobile computer, and a third programmable function such as Enter or push-to-talk. This trigger design helps streamline workflows by keeping key actions under the user’s finger without switching screens or changing devices. Power is supplied by a quick-release 7,000 mAh PowerPrecision+ lithium-ion battery. The battery can be released without removing the attached mobile computer, which simplifies battery swaps during long shifts. An optional Battery Locking Foot can secure the battery in place to help prevent user damage or theft. The RFD40 Standard Sled also supports batch mode. If a real-time backend connection is not available, the sled can collect up to 40,000 RFID tags and upload the data to the host device later. This makes it useful in environments where network coverage is inconsistent or where users need to complete RFID tasks offline. The sled is designed to adapt as Zebra mobile computer fleets evolve. Tool-free sled adapters allow users to change adapters quickly and maintain compatibility with supported mobile computers without sending devices to IT for retrofitting. This helps protect the investment as mobile devices are upgraded over time. Charging and connectivity options are flexible. RFD40 cradle cups can charge the sled alone, the mobile computer alone, or the sled and mobile computer together when attached. Cradles are available in one-slot and multi-slot versions, with charge-only and communication variants. Multi-slot communication cradles include Ethernet connectivity, while one-slot communication cradles support host connection through micro USB. The RFD40 can also be connected to a Windows-based PC or another host using a USB-C cable or cable cup. This allows the sled to be used as a tethered RFID reader, which is useful for configuration, demonstrations, proof-of-concept testing, firmware upgrades and fixed workstation RFID tasks. Software support is designed to reduce development effort. The RFD40 SDKs are based on Zebra’s existing RFID handheld SDKs, so existing RFID applications may only require recompilation with the new SDK rather than a full rewrite. The sled can also connect to 123RFID Desktop via USB cable or cable cup, allowing users to configure sleds, perform offline setup, run demonstrations and update firmware. Durability is suitable for demanding daily enterprise use. The RFD40 Standard Sled is designed to withstand multiple 5 ft / 1.5 m drops to concrete and 500 tumble cycles, equivalent to 1,000 drops from 1.6 ft / 0.5 m at room temperature. It is rated IP54 for dust and water protection and operates from -10°C to +50°C. Storage temperature is listed from -40°C to +70°C, and humidity tolerance is 5% to 85% non-condensing. The sled measures 5.94 in H x 3.3 in W x 6.5 in L / 15.1 cm H x 8.4 cm W x 16.65 cm L and weighs approximately 541 g with battery. User feedback includes decode LEDs, a battery status LED and a beeper. Host connection options include eConnex, USB-C cable and USB cable cup. Supported host computers include Zebra mobile computers, tablets and Windows-based PCs. RFID frequency and output support includes US 902–928 MHz, EU 865–868 MHz and Japan 916–921 MHz with LBT, with RF system output listed up to 30 dBm EIRP. Regional frequency availability and configuration should be matched to the deployment country and local regulatory requirements. Typical retail applications include cycle counting, item finding, planogram compliance, returns, inventory management, warehouse management, back-of-store management, BOPIS / BOPAC, direct store delivery and route accounting. Hospitality applications include check-in, administration, ticketing, loyalty cards, food safety, traceability, inventory management and field service. Healthcare applications include specimen tracking, patient tracking, hospital asset management, staff tracking, patient identification, admissions, medication administration and pharmacy tracking. Overall, the Zebra RFD40 UHF RFID Standard Sled is a powerful RFID expansion sled for organizations that want to add high-performance UHF RFID reading to compatible Zebra mobile computers. Its strongest value lies in its 1,300+ tags-per-second read rate, 12 m nominal RFID range, eConnex snap-and-go connectivity, 7,000 mAh quick-release battery, item-finder mode, tri-function trigger, batch mode, flexible charging ecosystem, tethered USB use, SDK continuity and rugged IP54 design.
