The Zebra DS9908-HD is a high-density hybrid presentation imager designed for laboratory and pharmacy environments where small, dense and difficult healthcare barcodes must be captured quickly and accurately. It is purpose-built for workflows involving blood, tissue, specimen samples, medications, microscope slides, biopsy cassettes and other lab items where general-purpose scanners may struggle. The DS9908-HD combines hands-free presentation scanning with handheld scanning in a single device. In presentation mode, users can quickly pass items in front of the scanner for fast, workstation-based scanning. When the scanner is picked up, it automatically switches to handheld mode and extends the scan range, making it easier to capture items on a table, tray or cart. This hybrid design is useful in crowded lab and pharmacy workspaces where some tasks are faster hands-free and others require precise handheld aiming. Scanning performance is built around a high-resolution 1280 × 800 pixel sensor, Zebra PRZM Intelligent Imaging technology, an 800 MHz microprocessor and high-density focus. In hands-free mode, it can read UPC 13 mil from 0 to 9.5 inches / 0 to 24.1 cm, Data Matrix 10 mil from 0 to 9.3 inches / 0 to 23.6 cm, and QR 20 mil from 0 to 9.5 inches / 0 to 24.1 cm. The DS9908-HD is designed for rapid-fire productivity. In optimized hands-free mode, the source lists first-pass read performance up to 240 inches / 610 cm per second for 13 mil UPC. The wide field of view reduces the need for precise item positioning, making scanning faster and more natural in repetitive lab and pharmacy workflows. Its hybrid mode switching is designed to be reliable over time. The scanner uses a capacitive touch sensor for hand detection and an accelerometer for motion detection, allowing it to switch between hands-free and handheld modes without mechanical parts that can wear out. In presentation mode, the scan range is limited to help prevent unintended scanning of nearby items. In handheld mode, an aim dot appears and the range is extended. The DS9908-HD also supports productivity tools that are valuable in lab environments. Multi-Code Data Formatting can capture multiple barcodes with one trigger press and transmit only the required data in the expected order. Preferred Symbol can output only the selected barcode when several barcodes are present on the same item, helping reduce errors and the need to physically cover unwanted codes. ScanSpeed Analytics can help identify barcode labels that slow down workflows. The scanner can also function as a document capture device. Zebra Intelligent Document Capture can capture high-resolution images of prescriptions, patient forms and other documents, with software correction for lighting variation and image alignment. Optional driver’s license parsing can support patient admission workflows, and OCR support helps transmit machine-readable text from ID cards and similar documents into applications. The DS9908-HD is built for daily lab and pharmacy use. The non-RFID DS9908 model is rated IP52 and is designed to withstand multiple 5 ft / 1.5 m drops to concrete and 2,000 tumbles in a 0.5 m tumbler. A double-sealed optical scanning system protects image quality, while the recessed scan window helps reduce the impact of smudges, dirt and scratches. The DS9908-HD has an Alpine White housing and a compact integrated stand. The DS9908 model measures 8.0 in H x 3.7 in W x 5.2 in D / 20.3 cm H x 9.4 cm W x 13.2 cm D and weighs 330 g. Supported host interfaces include USB, RS232, Keyboard Wedge and TGCS / IBM 46XX over RS485. It also supports more than 90 international keyboards.
