Both models are available in direct thermal and thermal transfer configurations, with healthcare variants available for clinical and laboratory workflows. The ZD400 Series is well suited to retail, healthcare, office, hospitality, government, laboratory, pharmacy, document tracking, asset labelling, shelf labelling, price marking, patient identification, prescription labelling, ticketing and other everyday business labelling applications. It is positioned for organisations that need more capability, security and manageability than basic desktop printers, while still requiring compact size and simple daily use. A key strength of the ZD400 Series is its intuitive operation. The printers include a five-status-icon and three-button user interface, replacing the basic single-button interface often found on entry desktop printers. This allows operators to see printer status more quickly, identify issues such as media replenishment needs, and keep printing workflows moving with minimal training. Media changes are designed to be simple. Colour-coded touch points and an updated media-handling design help guide users through media loading and replacement. OpenACCESS supports easier media loading, while dual-wall frame construction contributes to a more durable desktop printer structure. The ZD421 thermal transfer models also offer an important usability advantage through ribbon handling options. The ZD421 is notable for its thermal transfer ribbon cartridge option. The ribbon cartridge is designed for fast, fool-proof, one-way loading, helping reduce mess, setup errors and training time. The smart chip in the ribbon can notify users when the ribbon needs replacement. The ZD421 is also available in a traditional thermal transfer roll configuration, so customers can choose the ribbon format that best fits their workflow. Print performance is suitable for advanced desktop use. The ZD400 Series supports 203 dpi resolution as standard, with 300 dpi available as an option. Maximum print speed is 6 inches per second at 203 dpi and 4 inches per second at 300 dpi. The ZD411 offers a maximum print width of 56 mm at 203 dpi and 54 mm at 300 dpi. The ZD421 offers a maximum print width of 104 mm at 203 dpi and 106 mm at 300 dpi. The ZD421 thermal transfer cartridge configuration is listed with a maximum print width of 104 mm at both 203 dpi and 300 dpi. These differences should be considered when selecting between narrow-format and 4-inch label workflows. Media support is broad for desktop applications. Label length ranges from 6.35 mm to 991 mm. The ZD411 supports media widths from 15 mm to 60 mm. BLE is provided for Zebra’s printer setup mobile app only, and should not be positioned as a general-purpose Bluetooth printing interface. The ZD400 Series also includes Print Touch NFC, allowing users to tap to pair and print, according to the supplied material. The optional battery provides power for a full shift of printing at maximum print speed and supports all media handling options. A carrying case with shoulder strap and handles can make the desktop printer and battery portable for point-of-application printing. The supplied footnote should be checked for model and accessory fit before final configuration. Additional accessories include an enclosed power supply for cord-free installation of the ZD421, ZKDU keyboard display unit for standalone printing, and mounting adapter bracket for installation in the same location as previous models including GK420 and LP / TLP2824.
