The Datalogic Matrix 120 is an ultra-compact fixed-mount industrial 2D imager designed for applications where small size, simple integration and reliable 1D / 2D code reading are critical. It is the entry-level model of Datalogic’s Matrix family of industrial imagers, offering compact dimensions, flexible model options and industrial-grade performance for OEM, factory automation, electronics, healthcare, laboratory and packaging applications. The Matrix 120 is not a handheld scanner and not a mobile computer. It is a stationary industrial imager intended for machine integration, fixed reading points, OEM devices, kiosks, laboratory machines, print & apply systems and compact automation cells. Unlike the DS2100N, DS2400N, DS5100, DS6400, DS8110 or Blade 1D-focused readers, the Matrix 120 is a true 2D imager. It supports omnidirectional reading of standard 1D codes and 2D codes such as Data Matrix, QR Code, Micro QR, MaxiCode, Aztec and Dot Code. This makes it suitable for applications where compact 2D codes are used for traceability, product identification or process control. Typical applications include PCB board track and trace in electronics manufacturing, print & apply label verification in factory automation, food and beverage traceability, ticketing machines in OEM kiosk applications, clinical laboratory vial identification, chemical analysis machines and biomedical analysis equipment. The Matrix 120 is designed for tight integration spaces. Its ultra-compact form factor allows it to fit into small machines and devices where larger fixed industrial readers would be difficult to install. SER+USB models measure 45.4 x 31.1 x 23.5 mm, while SER+ETH models measure 45.4 x 48.5 x 23.5 mm. Different cable versions are available. Standard cable versions use 1000 mm cables, while short-cable versions use only 100 mm output cables. The shorter cable option is especially useful for OEM machine builders, chemical and biomedical equipment, and print & apply applications where internal wiring and compact mounting are important. The Matrix 120 is available with different sensor options. WVGA models use a CMOS global shutter sensor with 752 x 480 pixel resolution and can reach up to 57 full frames per second. 1.2 MP models use a CMOS global shutter sensor with 1280 x 960 pixel resolution and can reach up to 36 full frames per second. The WVGA version is suitable for standard applications, while the 1.2 MP version is better for higher-resolution barcodes. Wide-angle models are available for proximity reading. This makes the Matrix 120 useful when the reader must be mounted close to the code, such as inside compact OEM machines, kiosks or laboratory instruments. The focusing system supports manual adjustment in three pre-calibrated positions. WVGA models support 45, 70 and 125 mm focus positions, while 1.2 MP models support 45, 80 and 125 mm focus positions. This gives integrators flexibility while keeping setup simple and repeatable. The internal illuminator is white. Dedicated polarized models are available for 90-degree mounting and reflective surfaces. This is particularly useful when reading codes on glossy labels, reflective packaging or surfaces where glare could otherwise reduce readability. The Matrix 120 also includes dedicated ESD-safe models for electronics applications. These versions are important in PCB production and electronics manufacturing environments where electrostatic discharge control is required. A glass-free reading window is listed as suitable for food and beverage environments. This can be useful where contamination risk, cleaning requirements or breakage concerns make glass avoidance desirable. Sulfur gas resistance is available across the models according to ISO EN 60068-2-43. This allows use in tire manufacturing and similar environments, including rough manufacturing, final finishing and inspection stations. The Matrix 120 also supports Digimarc Barcode reading technology on red-light models. This makes it suitable for added-value decoding applications where Digimarc Barcode is required. This feature should be communicated carefully as model-dependent. Decoding capability includes omnidirectional reading on any supported code type, multilabel and multicode reading, and code quality metrics. Supported quality standards include ISO/IEC 15416 for 1D code quality and ISO/IEC 16022 / 18004, ISO/IEC 29158 / AIM-DPM and ISO/IEC 15415 for 2D code quality. Communication options depend on model. SER+ETH models provide RS-232 / RS-422 and Ethernet 10 / 100 Mbit/s with TCP/IP, UDP, FTP and industrial protocols including PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP. SER+USB models provide RS-232 / RS-422 and USB 2.0 high-speed, with USB-CDC and USB-HID support. This range of interfaces makes the Matrix 120 suitable for both OEM integration and factory automation networks. Ethernet models are appropriate where industrial Ethernet communication is required, while USB models are useful for embedded machines, kiosks, terminals and PC-connected applications. The Matrix 120 includes two software-programmable digital inputs and two software-programmable digital outputs, with PNP / NPN support. Operating modes include Continuous, One Shot and Phase mode, allowing the reader to be adapted to triggered, continuous or process-controlled reading applications. The user interface is designed for easy setup and operation. The Matrix 120 includes a laser aiming indicator, Datalogic Green Spot good-read feedback, X-PRESS Human Machine Interface, beeper, X-PRESS push button and six LEDs for Power, Ready, Good, Trigger, Communication, Status and Ethernet Network indication. Device programming is handled through DL.CODE, Datalogic’s Windows-based configuration software. Programming can be performed via Ethernet or serial interface, and the software includes a JavaScript output formatter. Serial Host Mode programming and the X-PRESS interface are also supported. The Matrix 120 is built for industrial environments despite its very small size. It has an aluminum housing, IP65 protection and an operating temperature range from 0°C to 45°C. Storage temperature is -20°C to 70°C, and humidity tolerance is 90% non-condensing. Power supply voltage is 5–30 VDC, with maximum power consumption from 1.6 to 2.4 W depending on model. This low power requirement helps simplify integration in compact machines and OEM devices. The Matrix 120 has a 2-year factory warranty. Regulatory support includes EU RoHS compliance, CE, FCC Class A, CSA listing for Canada and the U.S., KC and EAC. Laser aiming is Class 1M according to IEC 60825-1, and LED safety is Exempt Risk Group according to EN 62471.
