Datalogic Magellan 9800i Bi-Optic POS Scanner / Scanner-Scale

The Datalogic Magellan 9800i is a high-performance bi-optic POS scanner and scanner-scale platform designed for demanding retail checkout environments. It combines advanced digital imaging in all reading planes, seamless 1D and 2D barcode reading, scale integration, customer-facing mobile barcode reading and loss prevention features in a traditional in-counter checkout format. The Magellan 9800i is built for retailers that need fast, ergonomic and reliable checkout scanning at high-volume POS lanes. It is especially relevant for grocery, supermarket, hypermarket and large retail environments where barcode reading, weighing, EAS workflows, customer-facing coupon scanning and shrink prevention must work together at the checkout. A key strength of the Magellan 9800i is its full digital imaging architecture. With digital imagers in all planes, the scanner reads both 1D and 2D barcodes without requiring precise item orientation by the cashier. This helps maintain fast, uninterrupted scanning and reduces the need for repeated item handling. The scanner supports seamless reading of linear and 2D codes across all reading planes. Supported codes include standard 1D linear codes, GS1 DataBar linear codes, EAN / JAN composites, GS1 DataBar composites, GS1 DataBar Expanded Stacked, GS1 DataBar Stacked, GS1 DataBar Stacked Omnidirectional, MicroPDF417, PDF417, UPC A / E composites, Aztec Code, Data Matrix, QR Code and Micro QR. Optional Digimarc Barcode reading is also available. The Magellan 9800i provides reading coverage across six sides plus the customer-facing module. This broad reading coverage makes it suitable for fast retail workflows where products are moved quickly through the scan volume and where cashier ergonomics are important. The physical design is optimized for checkout ergonomics. The lower bonnet height allows more flexible placement of POS or self-checkout touchscreens, payment terminals and receipt printers, and can help accommodate ADA-related layout requirements. The large horizontal window is positioned for comfortable use by both standing and seated cashiers. The integrated customer-facing mobile device reader supports modern mobile commerce workflows. Customers can scan barcodes from mobile phone screens or paper coupons while the cashier continues scanning regular items. This eliminates the need for a separate scanner, power supply, outlet, interface cable, POS port and mounting hardware, while helping reduce total transaction time. The optional Top Down Reader, or TDR, adds a large topside field of view and also provides a customer-facing mobile device reader. The TDR is available in multiple heights and uses cast aluminum construction. It includes independent ON and GOOD READ indicators. The optional Top Down Imager, or TDi, is designed to enable machine learning functionality such as produce identification and barcode swapping detection. The source describes the TDi as a 17.8 cm / 7.0 in color camera using a 1 MP imager, 2.5 mm F2.0 lens, 12 white LEDs and UVC compatibility. Loss prevention is a major part of the Magellan 9800i platform. The All-Weighs scale platter increases the active weighing area with integrated horizontal and vertical scale platter surfaces. This helps cashiers weigh long or bulky items more accurately and with less handling difficulty. ScaleSentry shrink monitoring / prevention technology uses infrared detection to monitor the primary sides of the scale platter. If produce or other weighed items are placed outside the weighing surface and could be under-weighed, configurable audio and visual indicators can alert the cashier before the weight is transmitted to the POS. ScanSentry adds another layer of checkout control. It detects when items move across the scan volume and sends event codes when an object enters and leaves. If no barcode read is detected between these events, the POS can alert a cashier, halt the transaction or take other corrective action to help ensure items are scanned properly. The Magellan 9800i also supports EAS-related workflows. It includes integrated EAS antenna support for Checkpoint Systems Counterpoint IX and Evolve D11 models, Sensormatic integration through Datalogic SmartSentry firmware technology with the AMB-9010 / IPS EAS Deactivation Controller, Good-Read / EAS status indicators and NEDAP support. The scanner-scale options support different retail weighing requirements. Magellan scale technology supports adaptive scales from Avery, Bizerba, DIGI, Herbert, Mettler Toledo and Shekel. Maximum static weight is 68.0 kg / 150.0 lb. Dual interval scale options support 0.002 kg / 0.005 lb increments from 0 to 6.0 kg / 0 to 15.0 lb and 0.005 kg / 0.010 lb increments from 6.0 to 15.0 kg / 15.0 to 30.0 lb. Single interval scale options support 0.005 kg / 0.010 lb increments with 0 to 15.0 kg / 0 to 30.0 lb capacity. The Magellan 9800i also includes serviceability features for retail operations. The top-side accessible service port allows the product to remain installed in the counter for many service calls, including software upgrades. This can reduce service effort and scale recalibration costs. For user feedback, the scanner includes an 85 dB speaker with adjustable tone and volume and WAV file support. Visual indicators include good-read confirmation for all reading planes, scale center-of-zero indication, ScaleSentry events and Sensormatic EAS status. The scanner uses Datalogic Illumix Intelligent Illumination Technology, designed for digital imaging in retail. Multiple diffused LEDs are optimized in orientation and wavelength for eye comfort, helping maintain scanning performance without unnecessary operator discomfort. Connectivity is designed for enterprise POS environments. Auxiliary ports include powered RS-232, remote scale display, EAS controller ports, Sensormatic, Interlock and two powered USB Host Type A ports. Multi-interface support includes RS-232, IBM 46XX and USB, including OEM / IBM USB Plus Power for scanner and scale, RS-232 scanner / RS-232 scale, RS-232 scanner, single-cable RS-232 scanner-scale operation and USBCOM-SC. Remote management is supported through diagnostic reporting, WMI compliance for OPOS and JavaPOS, MBeans compliance for JavaPOS, Host Download, IBM Director, Wavelink Avalanche and other ERP management solutions. Scanalyzer Magellan On-Screen Programming configuration software is available, and OPOS / JavaPOS utilities are also available. The physical design supports multiple checkout layouts. Height above counter is 6.9 cm / 2.7 in, depth below counter is 10.2 cm / 4.0 in and width is 29.2 cm / 11.5 in. Available lengths include short shelf at 35.2 cm / 13.9 in, medium shelf at 39.9 cm / 15.7 in and long flange at 50.7 cm / 20.0 in. The Magellan 9800i is designed for retail operating conditions. Power input is 100–240 VAC, 50–60 Hz, with nominal operating power consumption of 12 W and sleep mode power consumption of 9 W. It supports ambient light from 0 to 86,080 lux, 25 kV air discharge ESD protection, 5–95% non-condensing humidity and operation from 10°C to 40°C.
