The scanner is available in black or white and features a distinctive curved enclosure. In-mold decorated top covers are available with Carbon-Fiber or Silver designs, allowing the scanner to match different store concepts and brand styles. Retailers can further customize the Heron HD3430 with company logo options, top cover choices, visual feedback and audio feedback. It supports standard 1D linear codes including GS1 DataBar linear codes, as well as 2D codes such as Aztec Code, Aztec Mesas, Data Matrix, MaxiCode, QR Code, Micro QR Code and China Han Xin Code. It also supports postal codes and stacked / composite codes including PDF417, MicroPDF417, MacroPDF, EAN / JAN composites and UPC A / E composites. The Heron HD3430 also supports image capture. Graphic formats include BMP, JPEG and TIFF, with grayscale options of 256, 16 and 2 levels. This gives the scanner additional flexibility for POS workflows that may require image capture beyond basic barcode reading. The reading system uses a Wide VGA imager sensor with 752 x 480 pixels. Aiming is supported by a 650 nm visible laser diode, while illumination is provided by white light. The scanner offers 25 IPS motion tolerance, 15% minimum print contrast and maximum resolution of 4 mils. Typical reading ranges include Code 39 5 mils from 3.5 to 20 cm, EAN-13 13 mils from 3.0 to 40 cm and Data Matrix 15 mils from 2.0 to 25 cm. Actual reading distance depends on symbol length, print quality, contrast, ambient light and scan angle. Good-read feedback is an important usability feature. Datalogic Green Spot technology provides clear confirmation directly on the scanned code. The scanner also includes polyphonic beepers, side and upper illumination, and a Good Read LED. The Heron HD3430 can automatically switch between handheld and hands-free operation. This allows staff to use it as a handheld scanner for specific items or as a presentation-style scanner at the POS counter, improving flexibility in daily checkout workflows. The scanner is compact and lightweight. It measures 15.2 x 15.3 x 6.8 cm and weighs 150 g. This makes it easy to handle while also giving it enough visual presence for customer-facing retail counters. The Heron HD3430 supports Keyboard Wedge, OEM / IBM USB, RS-232 and USB interfaces. It operates from 5 VDC +/- 5%, with typical operating current under 300 mA at 5 V and maximum operating current under 500 mA at 5 V. Sleep mode current is below 2.5 mA. The scanner is designed for standard retail operating environments. It supports ambient light from 0 to 100,000 lux, withstands repeated drops from 1.5 m / 5.0 ft onto concrete, and provides 16 kV ESD air discharge protection. Operating temperature is 0 to 50°C, while storage and transport temperature is -20 to 70°C. The enclosure is rated IP40. Configuration and deployment are supported by Datalogic Aladdin, available at no charge. OPOS and JavaPOS utilities are also available, and Remote Host Download can help lower service costs and improve operational efficiency.
